HW and Book Challenge

The celebration for the 40 Book Challenge is on June 6th.  You need to have read 40 books by that morning to participate in the celebration.  You have had since the first day of school to complete this... no excuses!

Blogging Homework: Two paragraphs.  What book are you currently reading?  What kind of setting?  Real world?  Magical?  What is your character learning?  What problems are multiplying?  Are there any metaphors (Ex: Harry's scar is a metaphor for all his struggles...), Is there a theme or life lesson?  Is there a quest?  Are there characters you don't feel like you can trust?  Are there any complicated characters that are not "true good" or "true evil"????

Fifth Grade Book Challenge

There are only about six or seven weeks left in the Fifth Grade Forty Book Challenge!!!!  This challenge started the first day of school.  If you have not read forty books this year, you do not get to participate in the celebration.  Make sure you have recorded ALL the books you've read on your Challenge sheet in 5B.  If you have not, you will not get credit for them.  You should be somewhere around book 34 or 35.  You may read books more than once.  They just need to be novels.  Double check how many books you've read and see if you're in good shape.  Again - this has been happening since the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, so no excuses.

Welcome Back!

Reading: Blog - 1. One paragraph, a book buzz, about your all-time favorite fantasy book (without giving it all away).  2. One paragraph answering these questions: What are your book club rules?  What days are you meeting?  What are your expectations for each  meeting?  How much will you read before each meeting?  What's your club name, logo, and motto?  What are the consequences for not pulling your weight?

Elated: If you are elated, you are extremely happy because of something that has happened.  Ex: I was elated by the news that my best friend was getting married.

Reading: Blog - Two paragraphs about a reading experience that stands out to you.  What book was it? What made it so special?  What did the book change for you?  (For example: Harry Potter changed my reading life.  It brought back a love of reading for me...) TWO PARAGRAPHS.  You may also include what your reading life has been like this year.  What made it successful for you?  Did you try anything new this year?  A new genre?  A new book that you never thought you would try before?  What changes did you make so that you could focus and enjoy your books better?

Vocab: Sheepish - If you look sheepish you look slightly embarrassed because you feel foolish.  Ex: He grinned sheepishly.

Social Issues Creativity Project

Due: 4/1/13

We’ve been discussion social issues that take place in our books and in the real world.  Now is your chance to show us how you see these social issues.  The object is to be as creative as possible and to display how you see these social issues.  Some of the social issues we’ve been noticing are:

War, women’s rights, friendships, salary inequality, racism, bullying, segregation, poor living conditions, pollution, violence, captivity, slavery, ownership, poverty, fighting, family relationships, etc.

1. Choose one of these social issues that you have been noticing either in your books or in the real world.  

2. Then choose a way to visually display how you see this social issue.  

3. Here are some suggested ways (or materials you could use) to portray the social issues you chose:

- Collage

- Write a song

- Draw a picture (using either pencil, colored pencil, marker, sharpies, etc)

- Use construction paper

- Create a rap

- Use recycled materials

- Paint a picture (using water color, etc)

- Pipe cleaners

- Cloth or some kind of material

- Duct tape

- Use wire, paper clips, yarn, string to form a visual display

- Clay or model magic to create a 3D visual

4. BE AS CREATIVE AS POSSIBLE.  THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX!

Reading homework tonight: Blogging - Two paragraphs about social issues that are popping up in your books.  What are they?  How are they affecting your characters?  How are your characters responding? Any real world connections? *Two comments

Vocab: Barren - Barren land consists of soil that is so poor that plants cannot grow in it.  Ex: The barren desert contained only cactus plants.

Bring in your parent/teacher conference slips!

***If you're on track for the 40 book challenge, you should be somewhere around book 28, 29 , or 30.

Science Test Thursday!  Remember to bring in your Evidence of Studying everyday!

There is no reading homework tonight.  There is a unit 17 spelling quiz tomorrow.  We did the unit 17 homework last week, so to review for the quiz you can look at that.

The only reading homework next week will be reading logs.  No other homework because we have the ELA MCAS on Wednesday and Thursday.  You are allowed to bring in three pieces of candy.  Make good candy choices!  Anything with a lot of sugar, or chocolate, is not a good idea.

MFA field trip was reschedule for June 11th.

TOMORROW IS THE 5TH GRADE FIELD TRIP TO THE MFA.

Please remember to get to school on time as we plan on leaving promptly at 9 am.  We will be returning to school around 2 pm.  Please pack a lunch to eat at the MFA.  We're looking forward to it!

Vocab: Scant - You use scant to indicate that there is very little of something as there should be.  Ex: The administration paid scant attention to these issues.
